Santorum takes Louisiana and parish in GOP ballot

Rick Santorum won the Louisiana Republican presidential primary Saturday, beating front-runner Mitt Romney in yet another conservative Southern state.

In St. Mary Parish, President Barack Obama and Santorum were the clear favorites among local voters in both parties.

Democratic Party candidates and their totals were:

“Bob” Ely, 73 votes, 7.03 percent

Barack Obama, 805 votes, 77.48 percent

Darcy G. Richardson, 54 votes, 5.20 percent

John Wolfe, 107 votes, 10.30 percent

For the Republican Party, candidate totals were:

Michele Bachmann, 3, 0.18 percent

Randy Crow, 1, 0.06 percent

Newt Gingrich, 285, 17.13 percent

Jon Huntsman, 1, 0.06 percent

Ron Paul, 67, 4.03 percent

Rick Perry, 7, 0.42 percent

Charles “Buddy” Roemer, 17, 1.02 percent

Mitt Romney, 431, 25.90 percent

Rick Santorum, 852, 51.20 percent

Franklin’s Jessie Morton won nomination to the Republican State Central Committee, 50th Representative District, Subdistrict B, with 329 votes or 64.51 percent, versus Blake J. Steiner with 181 votes or 35.49 percent.
