J.C. “SLIM” SHUGART, pictured above with his children, recently had an unexpected surprise as family and friends from around the country gathered in Morgan City at the Petroleum Club to honor his 90th birthday. Slim, whose mind is still as sharp as ever, stated it was the best birthday he could ever remember. Five of his six children and their families were present including Jim and Judy Shugart of Biloxi, Katherine and Larry Callais of Morgan City, Glenn and Kyle Shugart of Atlanta, Jay and Theresa Shugart of Hattiesburg, Miss., Debbie Shannon of Atlanta as well as nine of his 17 grandchildren. The only child missing from the festivities was Steven who is in Bosnia on a church mission, but he was well represented by two of his six children. Slim’s brother-in-law, Herbert Newton of Baldwin, made the trip. He is in his late 80s and remembers many notable moments of their lives. Also in attendance were Slim’s niece, Nancy Shugart of Austin and his nephew David Shugart with his wife Karla of Willis, Texas. Slim resides in Maison Jordan, an assisted living facility in Morgan City. He has found many new friends there to fill his days by sharing memories. He welcomes all visitors and will amaze you with what he can remember about your past association with the Shugarts.
