BATON ROUGE — Friends of Hilltop’s Hodge Podge announces its seventh annual Spring Plant Fling for March 23 at the LSU Hilltop Arboretum. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Hilltop Arboretum at 11855 Highland Rd. will have a veritable botanical bonanza of trees, shrubs, perennials, fruits, vines, ferns, gingers, incredible edibles, and grasses on sale.

Bring garden carts to load up on the offerings, some old and some new, some harvested from founder Emory Smith’s Hilltop garden. From abutilon to zephranthes, much is offered.

Plants in the Hilltop heirloom category include red buckeye, mayhaw, Devil’s Walking Stick, sassafras, Taiwan cherry, Wake Robin and snowbells.

Plants to stretch a garden’s horizons include Mexican weeping bamboo, nickel silver dyckia, red gum eucalyptus, Mexican mountain sugar maple, baby burgundy crinum and red carpet sedum.

There will also be a mini “Yarden” Sale stocked with gently abused, shabby chic gardening miscellanea solicited from Friends of Hilltop and its “notoriously funky, fan base.”

A listing of plant materials being offered at the sale will be posted at www.lsu.edu/hilltop prior to the sale.

Hilltop Arboretum is 14 acres in Baton Rouge that showcases an extensive collection of Louisiana native trees and shrubs.
