At the Aug. 6 meeting of St. Mary AARP, two scholarships were awarded to local students.

Michaela Balli of Bayou Vista and Alex Lancon of Franklin were presented with four-year scholarships. Plaques were presented to them by Helen Ross, Barbara Clark, Lydia Landry and Curtis Leonard, members of the St. Mary AARP scholarship committee.

More than 370 members attended the meeting. Parish Council President Paul Naquin and Councilman Kevin Voisin provided the meeting’s meal of catfish, white beans with salt meat over rice, bread and a salad. AARP’s Sterling Fryou cooked the catfish with the help of Mac McNemar, Floyd and Shirley Hymel, Carol and Hubert Francis, Pat Fryou, Jimmie and Shirley Couvillier and others.

For the September meeting, Morgan City mayoral candidate Boo Grizzaffi will have Chef Freddie Ledet prepare a three course meal with salad, chicken sausage gumbo and the main entree of grilled herb-marinated shrimp over fried eggplant medallions topped with an Acadian Sauce.

Meeting speakers included Grady Guidry, Teche Regional Rehabilitation Center director; and occupational therapist Kyle Breaux. Each spoke on the services they offer for in-patient or out-patient care.

St. Mary AARP President Paul Vella reminded members that the September meeting would be on Sept. 10 instead of Sept. 3 due to Labor Day. Before the meeting, Hubert Francis and Charles Fryer will provide live music from 4-5:30 p.m. Bingo will follow until meeting time. Meetings are held at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center at 4014 Chennault St. in Morgan City.

Flu shots will be given at the Sept. 10 meeting starting at 4 p.m. Members on Medicare may receive the shot for free. All others wishing to be immunized will have to pay the shot fee.

Vella also reminded members of the Aug. 27 Chapter meal at the Forest Restaurant in Franklin. For $12, members will have a choice of lasagna or chicken. Contact the office for tickets or call 384-2277.

Tickets are also available for the St. Mary AARP dance set for Saturday at the center. Tickets are $6 in advance or $10 at the door. Live entertainment by “Rocking Oldies” from Houma will be presented from 7-11 p.m.

Member Jane Aucoin delivered the prayer and the pledge while member Gordon Smith sang the National Anthem and served as photographer.

On Aug. 8, St. Mary AARP celebrated its 24th anniversary of its inception. Next year an elaborate anniversary party is planned.

Member Ann Lombardo was seeking volunteers to be part of the St. Mary AARP Mardi Gras Court on Jan. 19, 2013. She has openings for king, queen, dukes, maids and entertainers.
