GUEYDAN – Stephen Hammond of the State Police confirmed that there is an investigation taking place by the State Police of the Gueydan Police Department.

Hammond said DA Mike Harson requested the investigation.

Hammond said the investigation has something to do with evidence “gone missing” from the Gueydan Police Department.

Harson, said he received a complaint from a Gueydan police officer about missing evidence within the department. Harson advised the person to either contact the Sheriff’s Office or the State Police to do a separate investigation.

Harson said this person went to the State Police. Before the State Police begins an investigation, a request was needed from the district attorney. Harson said he wrote to the State Police with the request.

Harson said he could not comment on the details of the investigation.

Gueydan Police Chief Stoney Broussard said in an E-mailed statement, “As the chief of police, I support the investigation and will cooperate fully, as it is my goal to determine if there are any problems with the security and integrity of the evidence room and the evidence held. As the chief, I can assure you that any findings will be made public to include any corrective actions that may be needed to rectify any problems found. I cannot elaborate further at this point in time due to the matter being under active investigation.

According to Gueydan Mayor David Dupuis, investigators are looking into “inconsistencies” in the department. Mayor Dupuis says no one in the department is accused of anything, and no one is accused of breaking any laws.
