Stewart, a true freshman free safety, led all freshmen nationally and was 13th regardless of class with 126 tackles.
The total was second on the University of Houston’s squad, fourth in Conference USA and the second-best tackle total of all defensive backs nationally.
Stewart had six games with at least 10 tackles, including a career-best 21 stops at East Carolina.
In the season finale against Tulane, the former Patterson High standout recorded his career-first interception.
Stewart also had seven pass breakups as a freshman and posted 3½ tackles for a loss of 13 yards including a 10-yard sack against the University of Texas-El Paso.
Earlier last week, Stewart, along with Deontay Greenberry and Larry McDuffey, were named to the Conference-USA All Freshman Team.
