A former track and field standout at Central Catholic High School in Morgan City recently completed her freshman year of track at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.

Nia Stewart made strides throughout the season and finished the season ranked sixth in the long jump and 19th in the 100 meter dash — both in the Southland Conference — and in the top 100 in the East Region in the long jump.

Stewart recorded bests of 12.13 seconds in the 100 meter and 19 feet, 2 inches in the long jump.

She recorded one collegiate win in the 100 meter dash at the McNeese Cowboy Relays in Lake Charles.

Her 100 meter time is an improvement from the 12.22 seconds she clocked at the beginning of the season.

Stewart made the most improvements in the long jump. After recording marks around 17 feet in the indoor season, she improved in the outdoor season with a personal best of 19 feet, 2 inches.

Other highlights from Stewart’s freshman year include running the 200 meter dash for the first time ever. She ended the season with a personal best of 25.87 seconds.

She also recorded times of 7.37 seconds in the 55 meter dash and 7.80 seconds in the 60 meter dash. Her 60 meter time improved from an 8.03 second mark she was timed at in the first part of the season.
