Mayor Wayne Breaux said Thursday that he met recently with the largest property owner along the Bayou Choupique flood protection project area.

Breaux told the board of aldermen that the owner has “some concerns” and the mayor has set up a meeting with Miller Engineers & Associates to discuss those concerns.

“We’re moving forward with that,” he said. “We’ve got it on the fast-pace now, so we can get that project started.”

The project, to build flood protection measures along the small bayou to hold back storm surges, will protect certain areas of Baldwin from flooding.

“He made the statement that he’d rather not give up any land at all, but I don’t think that’s going to be possible,” Breaux said. “We’ll see what we can do to satisfy the problem and get it taken care of.”

Breaux also reported that the new fire station facility at the former Baldwin Elementary School is some 80 percent complete, with weather the only impediment. The contractor was awaiting doors as of Thursday to seal off the building from the weather before proceeding with further interior work.

He said completion should be around the first of March.

The town continues to pursue construction of a substation south of the railroad tracks and positioned on state right-of-way under the U.S. 90 overpass.

Breaux said he met with Rep. Sam Jones and the district administrator of Louisiana Transportation and Development. The administrator requested a survey of the area for further negotiation.

The mayor said because the highway is a future corridor of Interstate 49, he will be working through other red tape as the project continues.

The town also agreed to hire legal counsel to represent Baldwin in claims against BP after the oil spill of 2011.

Breaux additionally noted that Rep. Charles Boustany will have a staff member in Baldwin every first Thursday of the month from 10-10:30 a.m. to meet with constituents.
