Two teenagers run over by an allegedly drunk former New Orleans Saints player Saturday are expected by their mothers to be hospitalized for some time in Lafayette.

One of the girls, whose femur was broken, underwent surgery earlier this week and is scheduled for a second surgery Thursday, her mother said.

According to Eunice Police, Derrick Ned, 42, of 430 Charles St., was driving a 1999 Ford Expedition on South Beulah Street around 5:50 p.m. when he allegedly struck two 15-year-old female pedestrians, then left the roadway, striking a culvert.

The vehicle went airborne, ejecting Ned.

Ned and a passenger in his vehicle both sustained minor injuries.

Police say Ned was intoxicated at the time, and an open container of alcohol was found in the vehicle.

Ned was charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) second offense, two counts of negligent injury, open container, no seat belt and reckless operation.

Ned appeared before Judge Ellis Daigle Monday morning and his bond was set at $16,100.

One of the mothers expressed surprise at what she thought was a relatively light bail for such an incident.

Ned played football for Eunice High and Grambling State before a brief career as a running back for the New Orleans Saints, from 1993 to 1995.
