MORGAN CITY, La. -- The Cajun Coast Welcome and Interpretive Center in Morgan City is in the process of being tested to make sure it does not sink again as it began to do back in June.

“What’s happening this week is they’re driving test piles to make sure the facility is secure when it’s re-lifted and rebuilt,” said Cajun Coast attorney Gary McGoffin.

The three test pilings that were driven at the site were successful confirming the geotechnical data and engineering assumptions, he said.

“The next step is for the contractor, Expert House Movers, to provide us with the final proposal for the contract price; what it’s going to cost to repair the facility.”

Expert House Movers has moved the Newark Airport Terminal among many other massive buildings, McGoffin said. “These guys move all kinds of stuff,” he said.

Cajun Coast is planning a meeting to discuss progress on the welcome center at 4 p.m. Thursday in Franklin at Forest Restaurant.

The meeting is open to the public, but most of the meeting will be in executive session, which is not open to the public, said Cajun Coast Executive Director Carrie Stansbury.
