ABBEVILLE – Three South Louisiana high school bands are among those taking part in the 70th anniversary observance of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii next week.

The surprise Japanese raid prompted the United States to enter world war against that nation, Germany and Italy.

North Vermilion High of Maurice, Erath High, and Acadiana High of Lafaytette will have their bands on hand at the Battleship Missouri Memorial .

The performance will take place from noon to 12:45 p.m. pierside at the USS Missouri, near the USS Arizona Memorial, one of the most recognizable casualties of the Pearl Harbor attack.

The event will be webcast live at www.channel808.tv.

American casualties on Dec. 7, 1941 totaled more than 2,300 sailors, soldiers and civilians.

Ceremonies marking the Japanese surrender and the official end of the war were held aboard the Missouri in Tokyo Bay in September 1945.
