Tropical Storm Lee damages city park oak

Heavy rain this past weekend was apparently just too much for this oak tree at Grevemberg House Museum. The tree that was on the grounds when the historic house was built in 1851 is estimated to be at least 200 years old, according to museum curator Craig Landry. As the result of previous damage from a lightning strike, all of the tree’s limb and foliage weight was on one side. Landry guessed the weight of the rain caused the trunk to partially uproot and the main limbs to sink to the ground. City crews will remove branches and a contractor will have to be hired to cut down the trunk, he said.
