LEESVILLE – State Police said an 18-wheeler ran a stop sign at La. 8 and La. 28 east of here early Tuesday and was hit by another, killing both drivers and spilling molten sulphur onto the roadway.

Troopers responded to the crash around 4:10 am.

They said Harold Durand, 54, of Pollock ran the stop sign and was struck by the rig driven by Joseph Winford, 29, of DeRidder.

Winford was killed on impact; Durand died later at an Alexandria hospital.

Hazmat personnel were called out to clear the roadway of the primary east-west artery across Central Louisiana.
