An inmate death occurred at the St. Mary Parish Correctional Facility in Centerville on Saturday afternoon.

Eric J. Vining, 36, of 415 Hunting Road in Ricohoc was returning to his cell around 5:30 p.m. after taking a shower Saturday when jail personnel observed that the inmate looked ill.

Medical staff was immediately called in to treat him, and Acadian Ambulance was also summoned. Despite efforts to revive him, Vining died.

He was pronounced dead by the St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office. The investigation is ongoing pending the result of the coroner’s autopsy report. No further details are yet available.

Vining was arrested on July 23 at his residence for two counts of attempted second degree murder.

A deputy responded to a 911 hang up call from the home. When deputies arrived they found the victims, Vining’s mother and father, injured. Both were cut on the throat with a knife and needed hospitalization.

Vining was transported to the parish jail where his bond was set at $1,000,000.
