A Walgreens drug store is planned for location in Franklin.

Gordon Kolb Jr. of GHK Development, told the Franklin City Council Tuesday that closing on the property purchase is today.

The store would be located on La. 182 across from the intersection at Northwest Boulevard. The property is currently a sugar cane field.

Kolb said the Walgreens will be a full-sized store and employee 30-50 workers.

He said construction might begin as early as Feb. 1 and last seven months.

“We’re very excited to be long term members of this community,” Kolb said.

An “extension” of Northwest Boulevard across La. 182 will also open up the area for future development, Kolb said.

The council approved a resolution allowing construction of the building at the base flood elevation of 9 feet based on what City Inspector Blake Steiner termed “better available data” to the city’s flood control ordinance. Similar variances were granted to entities such as Gulf Craft and Franklin Foundation Hospital, Steiner said.

Also Tuesday the council adopted ordinances on reapportionment of council districts and liquor sales license renewals in the city.
