Between five and 7½ inches of rain fell in St. Mary Parish Tuesday and this morning.

St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin said there were no major problems reported, and most reports were “typical areas where we might have some drainage ditches maybe overflowing the banks.”

Naquin said the Yokley Pumping Station began operation Tuesday afternoon, as did the station near the La. 317 bridge over the Intracoastal Canal.

He said Bayou Choupique in Baldwin also overflowed its banks.

Baldwin public works officials say ditches overflowed, and water encroached in yards in the town, but no serious problems were reported.

St. Mary Parish Superintendent of Schools Dr. Donald Aguillard canceled school for today. He is expected to make a decision on possible closure Thursday by 3 p.m.

Today’s missed school day will have to be made up May 30.

The National Weather Service is calling for 100 percent chance of rain for today, with winds possibly gusting to 35 miles per hours.

That 100 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms continues through tonight and only drops to 90 percent tomorrow. Winds continue in the 10-20 mile per hours range.
