West St. Mary Lady Wolfpack earn District 6-2A Championship

BALDWIN _ West St. Mary’s Lady Wolfpack avenged their only District 2-A loss in two seasons with a 58-31 drubbing of the Catholic High School of New Iberia Lady Panthers here Friday in league play at the WSMHS Gymnasium.

With the victory, the West St. Mary captured the 2012-2013 District 6-2A Championship with a near flawless 7-1 overall record. The only blemish in an otherwise perfect league record was an earlier narrow district loss to Catholic High in New Iberia.

On Friday, the Lady Wolfpack served notice early, going on a 9-2 lead of which they never relinquished. At the half, the West St. Mary Lady Wolfpack stretched their lead to 23-9 thanks to a 14-7 second quarter run. The Lady Wolfpack extended their lead to 37-18 at the end of the third stanza before icing away the easy 58-31 triumph successfully defending their 2011-2012 District 6-2A Championship.

Amber Joe and Alexis Cross finished in double figures to propel the Lady Wolfpack.

Joe fired in a game-high 21 points on nine field goals and 3 of 9 free throws along with 10 rebounds and four steals.

Cross bagged 11 points on four floor baskets, six charity shots, 11 rebounds, four steals and one assist.

Rounding out the scoring for the West St. Mary Lady Wolfpack were: Gentrell Wells, 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 5 assists; Sequoya Ferguson, 4 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 assists; Gerianna Lyons, 4 points, 4 rebounds; Jakyrin Connor, 4 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists; Chi’Kira Tillman, 3 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 assist and Rhaya Marks, 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal and 3 assists.

District 6-2A Champion West St. Mary (14-7 overall, 7-1) will enter the state playoffs later this week when the brackets are announced.
