The Wolfpack moved down from Class 3A to Class 2A after this season’s reclassifications. WSM (2-0) opened the season with a 34-0 win over archrival Franklin in the annual Fire on the Bayou game. The Hornets (0-2) remains in 3A this season. Glenn Marsh scored a pair of touchdowns, while Tre’vell Dixon, Jontrey Tillman and Devone Robertson also scored for the highly regarded Wolfpack.
Last week, WSM went on the road to knockoff Northwest 31-13.
“This shows we come to play. We can play with the bigger teams,” West St. Mary head coach Ryan Antoine said. “We had to fight, but the guys did a great job.”
WSM rolled up 280 yards on the ground while Dixon, the Pack’s sophomore quarterback, competed 10-of-14 passes for 100 yards.
Tillman led WSM with 118 yards on eight carries, while Marsh added 90 yards on 12 carries.
Also in the mix on the ground for the Wolfpack is Gavin Brown with six carries for 22 yards; Daijuan Stewart, 10 carries for 19 yards; and Kale Delcambre, three carries for 11 yards.
Stewart added 92-yards receiving on seven catches, while David Anderson had 11 yards on three catches.
“We’re trying to get ready for playoff teams by playing quality opponents now,” Antoine said. “We’re not going to let up, and we’re going to clean up things we need to clean up to get ready for Ellender.”
West St. Mary has been making headlines for sometime now. The little school in Baldwin has three Division I college recruits on the 2010-11 roster. WSM opened in 1999, comprised of students from Baldwin, Sorrel, Glencoe, Four Corners and Charenton. Prior to that, all the kids in the area went to Franklin High.
Offensive/defensive lineman Jerald Hawkins committed to LSU in July. The 6-foot-6, 290-pounder was being recruited by Texas A&M, Texas, Tulane and many others.
Tillman, who rushed for 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns on a (3-7) team last season, is committed to Stanford. He was recruited as an athlete by the Cardinals so he’s not sure what position he will play at the west coast school.
Stewart, who plays multiple positions, is the Wolfpack’s third college prospect. He has committed to play at SMU in Dallas. He picked the Mustangs because of the school’s run and shoot offensive attack. He has played receiver, defensive back and quarterback for West St. Mary this season.
“I think with the three who committed this season, it shows we are blessed with enough talent to show everyone we have kids who can play at that level,” Antoine said.
Antoine, in his second season at the school, was the former defensive coordinator at New Iberia’s Westgate High School.
Ellender (0-2) was a little more than three minutes away from ending a 24-game losing streak that dates back to 2008 last Friday. Leading 21-18, the Patriots forced H.L. Bourgeois to a fourth-and-five at the 23-yard line, but HLB quarterback Tevin Jackson wouldn’t let his team lose. He lofted a pass to wide receiver Derian Moore for the game-winning touchdown, and the Braves escaped with 25-21 win.
“We’re a young football team,” Ellender’s first-year head coach Terry Washington said. “At this junction, we don’t know how to finish (games). That last catch, what can you say. The defensive back had great coverage. Moore just made a better play.”
Ellender has lost 25 straight games and 31 of its last 32 but led 21-6 in the fourth quarter of last week’s game. The key players for the Patriots are quarterback Dustin Creppel, running back Ralph Singleton and receiver Houston Chatman.
