But that is what Sonnier saw Friday mg around 6:30 a.m.. Her house is located west of Abbeville off of Sydney Gautreaux Road.
Sonnier, who is married to Charles Guillory, called her mom, Roxanne Evans, Thursday night to see if she and her son could sleep at her house because her husband was in her bed. She had filed for a divorce weeks earlier.
Evans invited them over and the next morning they were awoken to a horrific phone call. It was from Sonnier’s father who told Evans about the house being on fire. Evans broke the bad news to her daughter.
“I could not believe it. I was shocked,” said Evans when she heard the news.”
When three fire departments arrived at 6 in the morning, the house was burning and Guillory was sitting in his car with the windows rolled up and the car engine running.
Abbeville Assistant Fire Chief Matt Suire knocked on the car window to get his attention but got no response. Eventually, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff deputies was able to get the door open and escorted him out of the car into Acadian Ambulance.
About that time, Sonnier and Evans arrived to see the house engulfed.
Evans said her daughter and husband have been fighting the last few weeks.
Two days before the fire, Sonnier called the Sheriff’s Office on her husband, and she also changed the locks on her house.
“I guarantee he (husband) done this,” said Evans.
As of Friday morning, no charges have been filed against Guillory.
Sonnier, 27, was happy no one was hurt.
“I lost materialistic things,” Sonnier said. “I have to pull myself up and get through this. I have great friends and family that will help me.”
Responding to the fire were the Abbeville Fire Department, Maurice and Meaux volunteer departments. At 10 a.m. the fire departments were still on scene because they were having to remove the tin on the roof. The house was brick and covered with aluminum siding.
At 9 a.m., three hours after the fire departments arrived, the car Guillory was sitting in was still running because the ignition was broken.
