BATON ROUGE- Andrew Illes, 9, fell off a ledge while trying to take a picture on a school field trip to the Capitol on Nov. 4.

The boy's father, Adrian Illes, says his son and two other students were standing on platform taking pictures when he backed up too far, stepped off ledge and fell to bottom of the stair landing.

Paramedics said he fell nearly 25 feet off of the steps of the building.

Andrew suffered two broken legs, two broken heels and a break to his left upper arm. In addition, the 9-year-old also had an open break to his right leg, which the father explained that the break broke through the skin on his shin.

"Had he not fallen feet first, he would not be living today... absolutely not," Adrian Illes said.

Doctors have placed a halo brace on Illes' leg for 120 days then he will have a full cast for six weeks.

The Illes family says they want to see a railing installed on the ledge where Andrew fell and intend to call the state about it.
