Houma dancers entertain at St. Mary AARP

St. Mary AARP was entertained by the “Les Danseur de Bonne Terre” at its July 11 meeting. Performers in full costume presented two dance routines. They will make a return appearance for the Sept. 12 meeting.

Vice president Curtis Leonard officiated over the meeting that included approximately 300 members taking advantage of the Mini Health Fair done by Teche Regional Medical Center. TRMC personnel checked blood pressure, blood sugar levels and cholesterol. St. Mary AARP offered special thanks to Sabrina Roy of TRMC for coordinating the event.

A meal of red beans and rice, sausage, salad and rolls was provided by St. Mary Parish Councilman Gary Duhon and prepared by Keith and Mena Leonard. Members played bingo with all monies going to the players.

AARP will have its next chapter meal at Amelia Belle Casino on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the St. Mary AARP office at $12. The buffet will feature fried catfish, baked chicken, white beans and rice, green beans, corn soufflé, rolls, dessert and drink.

Leonard issued an open invitation to all St . Mary AARP members to attend the St. Mary AARP 24th anniversary celebration on Aug. 7 from 3 to 7 p.m. The dance will feature music by Hubert Francis and Gene Callahan. A giant anniversary cake, finger sandwiches, meatballs, chips and dip, plus punch will be featured.

Members were reminded that anyone interested in seeking office or board positions can now register at the AARP office. Nedra Giroir is the chairman of the nominating committee and head commissioner for the Nov. 7 election. The nominating committee includes Larry Giroir, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Fryou, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Vining and Helen Ross.

Member voting will be from 4 to 7 p.m. using State of Louisiana voting machines. Elected officials will be announced Nov. 7 following voting.

Newly elected St. Mary AARP officials will be installed at the Dec. 5 meeting. Offices are held for two years.

Recognized during the meeting was the St. Mary AARP 2011 Scholarship recipient Joshua Baudoin, a recent graduate of Hanson Memorial High School in Franklin.

In other St. Mary AARP news:

—Everyone was reminded that St. Mary AARP hosts Wednesday bingo sessions. All monies collected are won by participants. Games are held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hot dog or hamburger combos are available at $3, which also includes chips and a drink.

—The next St. Mary AARP meeting will be Aug. 1. Meal sponsor will be Darrin Guidry, candidate for state senate. Food served will be meat sauce spaghetti, corn, salad and bread. Guidry will be the guest speaker.
