MORGAN CITY — Work on Cypress Park and an adjacent ballpark was awarded to a New Iberia company for approximately $383,000.

The city’s Mayor and Council unanimously awarded the bid to Southern Constructors LLC, the lowest bidder out of four, for $383,045.

Tom Poole, project engineer for Poole LLC in Baton Rouge, said work could start relatively quickly and would depend on how fast the city could get Southern Constructors its construction documents to them and prepared.

The contract calls for the work to be complete in 120 days.

“They do this type of work regularly,” Poole said.

A major portion of the work will be covered by monies from the H&B Young Foundation while the city will draw from an allocation from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to replace the chain link fencing that was damaged during a past hurricane season (however, instead of a chain link fence, the city will be constructing one with brick columns and imitation wrought iron) and an additional unspecified allocation of monies from 2009 for the park.

Plans for the baseball field will include the construction of a 200-foot field that would be available for nighttime games.

Parking also will be moved from the First Baptist Church parking lot to the area between the current Complex Park and the Morgan City Public Pool.

To encourage parking here, the entrance to the new ballpark will be placed near the right-field line of the existing park, Complex Park and the current Victor II Boulevard entrance across from the church will be fenced in.

The baseball complex would be connected to Cypress Park with a paved walkway behind the outfield fence of the new field.

Plans for Cypress Park call for a passive park, including a gazebo for weddings and other events, historical markers explaining Morgan City’s history and possible accompanying sculptures and a walking trail, meant to connect the park’s different attractions as well as for light exercise.

The perimeter of the trail is about a quarter mile long, while walking the inside “figure 8” path at the park would be about a third of a mile long.

Matte said there are other items not included in the bid that will be contracted separately.

Any work that cannot be completed during construction will be done as monies become available.

Other tasks that can be done in-house will be completed by city crews.
