D&L Salvage is seeking a lease on a port structure to expand their current operations. Lease negotiations are “moving forward” according to Special Assistant to the Director David Allain.
Also, Marine Turbine Technologies is seeking an expansion.
“They’re looking for acreage on the end of the dock, about 1.3 acres,” Allain said. “They’re ramping up their business to build frack machines, and they need a testing facility to test them as they come out of their plant.”
Allain said MTT would like to fence the area, and make $350,000 in improvements to the building they currently lease from the port commission.
“We want to be able to access the property and they have no problem with that,” Allain said. “They agreed to put two, 30-foot rolling fences which will give us 60-foot of entrance. The only provision we made was to give them a 72-hour notice so they could get their equipment off, which they agreed to.”
Fracking is a technology used to extract natural gas from rock formations deep below the surface of the earth.
The port commission agreed to allow Allain to continue negotiations with MTT.
Allain also reported that Gulf Coast Broadband wireless Internet service is readying a tower to provide service to the port area. Negotiations are ongoing with Cleco to provide power at the location of the tower.
The port is leasing a 14 by 14-foot area to Gulf Coast at $200 per month.
“They’re bringing service to customers that are expanding and do not have Cox,” Allain said. “We cannot get their attention at all. Gulf Coast is willing to come in here and do this as a partnership.”
