BATON ROUGE – The man and woman involved in an I-10 crash that killed five people, including a former Eunice woman and her three children, were indicted Wednesday.

David Leger, 29, was indicted on five counts of vehicular homicide; Kelsye Hall, 22, on five counts of negligent homicide.

The reason for the differnt charges is Leger, of Palmetto, was allegedly legally drunk at the time and Hall, of Baton Rouge, engaged in a road-rage incident leading to the crash.

The March 13 crash killed Kimberly Stagg, 19, and Effie "Liz" Fontenot, 29, both of Prairieville, and Fontenot’s three young sons — Austin Fontenot, 3, Hunter Johnson, 7, and Keagan Fontenot, 11.

Effie Fontenot was driving the car in which her sons and Stagg were riding.

State Police investigators have said Hall and Leger were involved in some sort of encounter while driving westbound on the interstate that led to Hall intentionally preventing Leger from passing her vehicle.

At one point, Cain said, Hall was driving on the center line to keep Leger from passing on either side.

When Leger drove onto the right shoulder of the interstate in an attempt to pass Hall, she moved into the right lane as Leger was merging back onto the road, and the rear of his truck clipped the front of Hall’s vehicle, Cain stated.

Leger’s pickup spun out of control, crossed the median and collided head-on with Fontenot’s car. The car burst into flames.

Stagg’s parents are seeking an unspecified amount of compensatory damages from Leger and Hall in a suit filed in April, and punitive damages from Leger because he allegedly was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
