He was among the victims of a spree in which several American flags were burned.
Ahmad Khaled, 25, of 2114 Shreveport Highway, Apt. 270, Pineville, was arrested on Sunday by Alexandria Police officers and accused of the flag burnings.
He is charged with five counts each of simple arson, flag desecration and hate crime, and one count each of criminal mischief and attempted simple arson.
Alexandria Police Sgt. Bruce Fairbanks said Khaled was charged with a hate crime under Louisiana Revised Statute 14:107.2.
“It is believed that he chose his victims because of perceived national origin,” Fairbanks said. Khaled “admitted a misdemeanor theft, he stole a flag, and set (the flag) on fire, which is misdemeanor arson. The case is still under investigation.”
Police received a complaint that the native Ohio resident, according to the arrest report, was acting suspiciously on Parliament Boulevard, which led to his arrest.
The flag-burning incidents upset Mayeux, 79, a Marine Corps veteran.
“I take great pride in our American flag. If you don’t like the way we do things in this country, then leave. No one is forcing you to enjoy the freedoms we have in this country,” Mayeux said
