Jack Ernest Russell, 78, a lifelong resident of Morgan City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at his daughter’s home after a brief battle with leukemia.

Jack was a 1952 graduate of Morgan City High School and attended LSU, majoring in electrical engineering. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from the end of the Korean War in 1953 to 1955. He was employed for more than 30 years at Tesoro Petroleum Distributing in Amelia. During his retirement, he enjoyed visiting the library, watching old movies, crossword puzzles, riding his bicycle and long walks.

Jack was a simple, quiet man with few needs or wants. He was well known for his not-so-funny jokes. He loved playing games with his two granddaughters, who thought of him as their favorite playmate. He surprised them often with dollar-store toys and sweet treats. Jack will be remembered as a loving father and a wonderful Poppi to his granddaughters.

Survivors include one daughter, Melanie Russell Galliano and husband Clint of Bayou Blue; two granddaughters, Valerie and Veronica Galliano; two sisters, Vivian Spinella of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Barbara Russell of Morgan City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Annie Russell; his wife, Joyce Breaux Russell; and one sister, Betty Russell Grizzaffi.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at Twin City Funeral Home in Morgan City.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at the Morgan City Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the East St. Mary Veterans Funeral Squad.
