The St. Mary Soil and Water Conservation District has created a floating island as a test to determine if it will help to reduce wave action and protect the shoreline. It is a 300-foot strip planted with California bulrush and cut grass in each hole with placed peat moss on top. The site will be monitored after the first 30 days, again at 60 days and then every four months after that to document its status. The district received a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant for the project. There are plans for tree and shrub seedlings on coastal ridges and dunes to enhance maritime forest habitats as well. Floating Island Environmental Solutions, LLC is the provider of the base materials and installation professionals.
