NEW ORLEANS - The random killing of a two-year-old has jolted a city accustomed to gunfights.

Keria Gordon died in a shower of bullets Sunday at the BW Cooper housing development, four days shy of her second birthday.

According to police, men in two vehicles drove into the complex, opening fire in a courtyard filled with kids.

Investigators said they believe the shooters were targeting a 20-year-old man, who was hit several times.

The target has a criminal history of his own and has been arrested twice in the last two years on gun charges.

Police Supt. Ron Serpas said “It is reprehensible that the courts continue to send these men to the streets of New Orleans to be murderers or be murdered, and at the same time, innocent young children are lost,” he said. “The NOPD is arresting a whole lot of dangerous people, but somehow or another, with the drive-thru window of justice on Broad and Tulane, they’re right back on the streets here and tonight, we have a two year old child lost her life because of these types of people not being held accountable.”
