OPELOUSAS – Authorities say a teenager died when shot in the head while playing with an old pistol.

St. Landry Parish deputies say on Thursday, around 1:30 a.m., a 16-year-old male called 911, saying his friend, Eric Myers, just shot himself.

The boys were camping out in a tent on their grandfather's property near the I-49 Northbound Service Road, near Bay Ridge Road in the Opelousas area.

When deputies first reached the victim, he was breathing but not responding. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:56 am.

The 16-year-old told deputies the boys were playing with an old pistol, when the 15-year-old placed the pistol to his head and pulled the trigger.

It was reported the boys had apparently taken the pistol from their grandfather's home to protect themselves against animals getting into food left on the property.

Funeral services are Saturday at Sibille.
