CAA offering tax preparation service

St. Mary Community Action agency is once again providing free tax preparation.

Appointments are being taken at St. Mary Community Action Agency, 1407 Barrow St., Franklin; St. Mary Neighborhood Service Center, 330 Cardinal St., Morgan City, and St. Mary Neighborhood Service Center, 203 Martin Luther King St., Baldwin.

Applicants need to provide a W-2 form (no last check stub will be accepted); Social Security cards for the taxpayer and any dependants being claimed, and birth certificates for all dependants being claimed.

St. Mary CAA is providing these services as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). They will help prepare basic 2011 tax returns for individuals, low-income families and seniors free of charge.

Some tax payers may also qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The Earned Income Tax Credit helps make a difference in the lives of hard working families and individuals if the earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) are less than:

$45,060 ($50,270 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children; $41,952 ($47,162 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children; $36,920 ($42,130 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child or $13,980 ($19,190 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children.

The 2011 tax year maximum credit are $5,891 with three or more qualifying children; $5,236 with two qualifying children; $3,169 with one qualifying child and $475 with no qualifying children.
