Jacob Aucoin, 25, of Degravelle Road was arrested Saturday at 1 a.m. and charged with improper lane usage, first-offense driving while intoxicated and aggravated flight from an officer, Morgan City Police Chief Marc Folse said.
The incident began when an officer on patrol near Business 90 and Ditch Avenue observed Aucoin westbound in the turning lane apparently traveling at a higher speed than the posted 35 mph limit.
As officers approached the vehicle, Aucoin began to accelerate. When officers attempted to stop Aucoin near the U.S. 90-La. 70 junction, the vehicle made a right turn onto the ramp to U.S. 90 and headed eastbound, Folse said.
Officers pursued the vehicle, now travelling in excess of 120 mph, out of the city limits towards Amelia, and along the way, Aucoin nearly caused several accidents with other eastbound vehicles, the chief said.
He exited U.S. 90 at the Amelia exit and headed north on Lake Palourde Bypass Road where he topped 110 mph before he attempted to make a turn onto Lakeview Road.
However, Folse said while attempting the turn, Aucoin entered the yard at 1192 Lakeview Road, made a 180-degree turn and began heading toward the officers, nearly striking their unit head-on.
He then struck a carport awning and three vehicles parked beneath it while continuing to evade officers, the chief said.
Aucoin eventually lost control and nose-dived the vehicle into the drainage ditch at Lake Palourde Bypass and Lakeview roads, Folse said.
Aucoin was arrested and transported to Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City where he was treated for cuts sustained after crashing into the ditch.
Upon his release, he was transported to the station where he failed a field sobriety test and recorded a blood-alcohol content of .180 grams-percent via chemical testing, the chief said.
He remained in the City Jail this morning with bond set at $250,000.
Elsewhere, Harold Turner, 62, of Adams Street, Morgan City, was arrested Saturday at 3:03 a.m. and charged with possession of cocaine after officers were dispatched to Florida Alley and Barrow Street in regards to a possible narcotics transaction, Folse said.
Officers observed Turner traveling south on Florida Street on a bicycle, and upon officers’ approach, he dropped something on the ground, the chief said.
He was detained and officers located a white rock of suspected crack cocaine near where Turner was first observed, Folse said.
He remained in the City Jail this morning with no bond set.
In other local police news, Jane Gugliotta, 42, of Francis Street, Berwick, was arrested Friday at 3:07 p.m. on a warrant for possession of Soma after she was located at her residence, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said.
She was released from the Parish Jail on a $5,000 bond.
Chad Kirkland, 27, of Field Street, Bayou Vista, and Katie Couvillier, 21, of New Iberia were arrested Friday at 6:47 p.m. and charged with possession of Adderal and marijuana after the vehicle they were traveling in was stopped for crossing the center line on Universe Street.
The Morgan City Police Department K-9 officer was called to the scene and alerted to something in the vehicle, Hebert said.
St. Mary Parish Multi-jurisdictional Drug Task Force agents subsequently found marijuana and Adderal pills, the sheriff said.
Both were booked into the Parish Jail with Kirkland remaining incarcerated this morning with bond set at $7,000, while Couvillier later was released.
