ABBEVILLE – Welsh Parks and Recreation Director and former college baseball coach Jerry Martinez has accepted a similar position with the City of Abbeville.

The City Council hired him Tuesday night to succeed the late Jason O’Brien.

Martinez’ resume dates back to 1984, when Martinez began a career as a college baseball coach. He worked on staffs as a pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Northwestern State University, Troy University, Western Kentucky University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Sam Houston State University and Bakersfield Community College.

Martinez has also worked with several baseball training facilities, as well as working since 2003 as self-employed baseball instructor and consultant. He has served as director of the Louisiana Legends Baseball Organization since ‘08.
