All four local high school squads picked up victories in local baseball action on Thursday.

Patterson defeated Houma Christian, 11-1, and Central Catholic defeated Westgate, 3-2, in nine innings in the Patterson Tournament.

In the A&E Basin Bengal Classic, Morgan City defeated H.L. Bourgeois, 18-14, while Berwick shut out Ellender Memorial in five innings, 10-0.

In Patterson’s win, the ’Jacks never trailed, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after two innings en route to the 11-1 victory.

Cameron Fontenot picked up the win on the mound for Patterson and also led the ’Jacks at the plate.

In four innings pitched, Fontenot surrendered one earned run on two hits with four walks and struck out six.

At the plate, Fontenot went 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI.

Micah Gowan closed out the game for Patterson, pitching an inning and striking out one.

“I thought Cameron Fontenot gave us a great start, and Micah Gowan did a fantastic job to close it out on the mound,” PHS coach Ryan Jensen said.

Other ’Jacks contributing at the plate were Spencer Landry, 1-for-3 with two runs, a single, three RBI and two stolen bases; Ryan Wade, 1-for-3 with a run, a single and two RBI; Bryce Tabor, one run, an RBI and a walk; Jaydrick DeClouette, two runs and two walks; Cameron Clements, an RBI; Blaine Laubach, a run and a stolen base; Aaron Hazel, two runs; and Chase Perry and Chase Martin each with a run.

“I was very pleased with the way we played tonight,” said Jensen, whose squad is 1-0 to start the season. “I thought we swung the bat better and had some guys deliver hits and sacrifices in key situations. It’s obviously a work in progress, but a step in the right direction.”

Conner Bates suffered the loss for Houma Christian. In 3 and a third innings, he surrendered 11 runs — three earned — on five hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Bradley Lovell came on in relief of Bates, and in a third of an inning, he recorded a strikeout.

Patterson did not commit an error in the victory, while Houma Christian committed seven miscues.

“Errorless defense was a huge bonus as well,” Jensen said. “If you can throw strikes and make routine plays you will have success.”

Patterson will continue play in its own tournament at 3:15 p.m. today against Westgate.

In other action at the Patterson Tournament, E.D. White defeated South Lafourche, 2-0.

CCHS, the other local squad participating in the PHS Tournament, plated single runs in the first, fourth and ninth innings and pounded out 10 hits in the victory.

Eriq Blanchard, who finished 1-for-5, drove in the game-winning RBI with a single in the ninth inning.

“We played hard and really well at times but continued to leave too many people on base,” CCHS coach Tyler Jensen said. “We were a clutch hit or two away from really busting the game open early on, but just couldn't come through until the very end. We also made some silly errors at times that kept them in the game, but turned three double plays in key spots. I’m proud of our guys for continuing to play hard and finding a way to win a game that we deserved to win. Hopefully we continue to play with this same intensity all weekend long.”

Other CCHS contributors included Barron Courtney, 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI; Bryson Barbier, 3-for-4 with a run; Justin Arceneaux, 2-for-3 with an RBI; Austin Autin, 1-for-5 with two runs; Samuel Guarisco, 1-for-4; and Ridge Rousseau, 1-for-3.

Nick Longman earned the win in relief of Barbier. In two innings, Longman surrendered one hit and struck out two.

Barbier started the game, and in seven innings of work, he surrendered two runs — none earned — on four hits, with four walks and nine strikeouts.

Jensen said his squad got a solid performance from starter Barbier.

“It was everything and more than what we hoped from him tonight,” Jensen said. “He kept us in the game.”

The Eagles will return to action in the Patterson Tournament when they host Centerville today at 3:15 p.m. in Amelia.

Morgan City, Berwick both pick up victories

Both Morgan City and Berwick earned victories in their opening games of the A&E Basin Bengal Classic on Thursday at Tiger and Panther diamonds, respectively.

In Morgan City’s victory, the Tigers responded from a 5-0 second-inning deficit for the win.

Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the third, the Tigers erupted for seven runs in the third inning to take an 11-4 lead.

While the Tigers gave up seven runs to HLB during the next four innings, the Tigers scored seven during the same time frame, including a six-run, sixth inning.

The Tigers were aided by nine HLB errors.

Defensively, the Tigers committed four errors.

Offensively, Morgan City pounded out nine hits, while HLB pounded out 13 hits in the loss.

“The wind wreaked havoc with our defense last night. Any ball in the air was an adventure, but our guys did a great job of not panicking after falling behind 5-0. We continued to play our game offensively and put a lot of pressure on HLB’s defense,” MCHS coach Marc Gonzales said.

While Brennan Scully started the game for Morgan City, he was relieved by Chandler Delaune in the third inning with the bases loaded and nobody out.

Delaune, who earned the win, got MCHS out of the inning without giving up a run.

“The game could have gotten out of hand there, and he shut them down,” Gonzales said. “He also had some good plate appearances.”

In his five innings of work, Delaune surrendered nine runs — three earned — on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts. He also hit three batters.

Scully surrendered five runs — four earned — on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Buck Gautreaux led Morgan City at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with a double, two runs and four RBI, while Brandon Beadle went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and one run. Delaune added a 2-for-4 performance with a double, an RBI and two runs.

Other MCHS hitters included Nick Gagliano, 1-for-5 with two runs and an RBI; Dylan Hymel, 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI; Nicholas Spinella, 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI; Adeyemi Wheeler, an RBI and four runs; Scully, a run and an RBI; Josh Glatter, two runs; and Grant Perry, a run.

“It was a great team effort with many guys contributing to the victory and picking each other up,” Gonzales said. “It’s not how you would script the first game of the year to go, but we found a way to win and that says a lot about the resilience of the club.”

In Berwick, the Panthers defeated Ellender behind a combined no-hitter between Chris Charpentier and Drew Landry.

Charpentier pitched the first 4 and 2/3rds of an inning and struck out six, while Landry pitched the final third of an inning.

Berwick scored runs in each inning, highlighted by a four-run fourth.

The Panthers pounded out eight hits and committed one error. Ellender committed two miscues.

Logan Theriot led Berwick at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with a single, a double and three RBI, while Reed Leonard added a 2-for-2 performance with a single and three RBI.

Other BHS hitters included Ian Bergeron, 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI; Charpentier, 1-for-2 with a single and an RBI; Brooks Richard, 1-for-3 with a double; and Lee Rhodes, 1-for-3 with a single.

Berwick falls to

St. Amant

The Berwick Lady Panthers fell on the road Thursday to Class 5A St. Amant, 13-7.

While Berwick scored three runs in the top of the first inning, St. Amant countered with six in the bottom of the first and another three in the third to take a commanding 9-3 lead.

Berwick countered with four runs in the fifth inning to cut the score to 9-7, but St. Amant equaled Berwick’s output in the bottom of the inning for the final.

Berwick (0-2) pounded out 13 hits in the loss but committed three errors, while St. Amant pounded out 15 hits and committed one error.

Abigail Ohlin and Elizabeth Hover led Berwick at the plate with 3-for-4 performances apiece, while Courtney Henry and Haley Girard each went 2-for-4.

Other BHS hitters included Megan Fabre, 1-for-2 and Maddie Gray and Amber Girard, each 1-for-4.

Megan Fegenbush was saddled with the loss for Berwick.

Berwick will return to action today when it participates in the Ascension Catholic Tournament. The Lady Panthers will begin play at 5:15 p.m. against Catholic-Pointe Coupee

Hanson downs

Lady Tigers

Hanson defeated Morgan City, 9-8, in Morgan City’s home opener on Thursday.

In a back-and-forth ball game, Hanson scored the deciding run in the top of the seventh inning.

“It was (a) hard loss battling all game and going down by one run,” MCHS coach Kelly Jo Aucoin said.

Amber Bailey led Morgan City at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance that included a double, three runs and a walk, while Katelyn Adams added a 2-for-4 performance with a run and two RBI.

Other MCHS players making contributions included Brandi Ingram, 1-for- 4 with a triple, an RBI and a run; Reina Fernandez, 1-for-2 with an RBI; Tyler Hebert and Nikki Pennison, each 1-for-4; and Marilynn Bailey, two runs and she was hit by a pitch.

“We hit well, driving the ball and moving runners around to score, but we need to do better not leaving any (runners) on (the) base path and especially in scoring positions,” Aucoin said.

However, Aucoin said her players were more confident at the plate.

“This was a big improvement,” she said.

Defensively, Aucoin said her squad needs to eliminate errors, which hurt the squad in its loss.

On the mound, Hebert surrendered three earned runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers will return to action this weekend when they participate in the Lafayette Tournament at Pelican Park. Today, the squad will play at 6:30 p.m. against South Plaquemines, while it will hit the diamond again on Saturday at 10 a.m. against False River and again at 2 p.m. against Lafayette High.

Lady Eagles fall

on the road

Class 5A Central Lafourche shut out Central Catholic in high school softball action on Thursday in Matthews.

Leading 1-0, Central Lafourche broke the game open in the fifth inning with five runs and added another in the sixth inning.

CCHS’ Brittany Longman (1-1) was saddled with the loss. In four innings, she surrendered four runs — three earned — on eight hits and struck out three.

In three innings of relief, Olivia Crawford surrendered three earned runs on three hits with four walks.

Crawford picked up CCHS’ lone hit.

The Lady Eagles (1-1) will return to action today when they meet Thibodaux High School at 7 p.m. in the Thibodaux Tournament.

Paterson falls at home

In Patterson, the ’Jills fell in its home opener to H.L. Bourgeois, 7-2.

HLB scored in every inning except the first and third, while Patterson scored its two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Madi Morris and Jordon Aucoin led Patterson at the plate. Morris finished with a 1-for-3 performance with a run, while Aucoin finished 1-for-1 with a run.

On the mound, Taylor Hall (0-2) pitched 4 and a third innings and surrendered three earned runs on three hits with six walks and strikeouts apiece.

Carissa Fontenot pitched the other 2 and two-thirds innings for Patterson and surrendered four earned runs on four hits.

The ’Jills (0-2) will return to action this weekend when they play in the Lafayette High Tournament.
