Patterson knows what to expect in tonight’s Class 3A regional round playoff battle against longtime-rival E.D. White in Thibodaux.

“Anytime you play someone you know, it allows the players to relax because they know what to expect,” Patterson head coach Ryan Taylor said. “They have their style, which has been successful for them, and they are not going to change just because they are playing us.”

Patterson (23-3), the 10th-seed, knocked off 23rd-seeded Albany, 67-50, at home Tuesday in bi-district play.

Albany was rattled by the ’Jacks full-court pressure, unable to score until the 4:48 mark of the first quarter.

“We were able to hit some shots and get into our press early,” Taylor said. “I also think the situation got to them early.”

The Lumberjacks never trailed in the game, leading by as many as 21 before the Hornets closed the gap.

Tremaine Lightfoot led Patterson with a double-double, 16 points and 12 rebounds. Point guard Dylan Sanders also had an outstanding game with 14 points, seven assist and three steals. Gino Hall contributed 11 points and three steals, while Deondre Skinner added eight points and five rebounds, while battling foul trouble.

Freshman Daylon Charlot had eight points, including a high-flying dunk; Trevon Stewart had six points, seven assist and three steals; and Malik Garrett scored four.

E.D. White (18-8), the 7th-seed, used multiple defenses to handcuff Caldwell, 47-31, at home Tuesday.

The Cardinals scored the game’s first nine points before Caldwell scored with 3:48 left in the first quarter. It was the Spartans only basket of the quarter as E.D. White went on for a 14-2 lead.

Caldwell made just 8-of-24 shots, were only 4-of-9 from the three-point line and committed 17 turnovers.

Caldwell coach Cory Emerson said his team hadn’t faced many man-to-man defenses this season, especially one as good as E.D. White’s.

“They’re going to try and do things to confuse us on offense,” Taylor said. They will play several different defenses, but it will all be something we have seen.”

EDW big man Ja’Dante’ Frye led the Cardinals with 14 points, and he will get a lot of attention from Patterson tonight.

“Frye is tough to stop but they are certainly not a one man team. They have several guys who can make plays and are very comfortable in their system,” Taylor stressed. “We will have to be aware of the action on the floor, not necessarily where one particular person is. It will require a total team defensive effort for us to be successful.”

Offensively, the Jacks will need to be disciplined as well.

“We are going to have to be smart on offense,” Taylor said. “We’re going to need good shot selection. They do a great job of help side defense, so we are going to have to concentrate on our spacing and take the shot we want, but this is nothing new to us.”

One factor that may favor Patterson is experience. The Jacks have seven seniors and two juniors who are all playoff tested.

“This group has played a lot of basketball here,” Taylor said. “It is going to be a challenge, but that is playoff basketball. We’re excited about the opportunity to play this game. There are only 16 teams left in (Class) 3A, and we’re one of them. We need to go out and play and let the chips fall where they may.”
