A Morgan City man was arrested Tuesday on a variety of drug charges following a traffic stop.

Michael Coon, 41, of Bush Street was arrested at 4:55 p.m. for second offense possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a firearm in the presence of controlled dangerous substance.

St. Mary Narcotics Task Force agents were patrolling the Morgan City area when they observed a suspect vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign. Agents conducted a traffic stop and received consent to search the vehicle where they located marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a gun, Sheriff Mark Hebert said.

Coon was booked into the parish jail where he remained this morning with no bond set.

In Berwick, Gary Maibeth, 23, of Nicklaus Street in Berwick was charged at 7 p.m. Tuesday with warrants for hit and run driving and improper backing.

Chief James Richard said he turned himself in on the warrants that were a result of a traffic accident at 3:20 p.m. Monday on Nicklaus Street.

Maibeth was released after posting a bond of $1,250.
