Let’s Go Riding Franklin started out as a Facebook chat and has gained tremendous interest among those who hold fond memories of the popular Main Street cruise that was instrumental to so many people who grew up in the city.
Let’s Go Riding Franklin has already attracted a large following from St. Mary Parish and beyond, and the second event is set for March 17.
The event provides a nostalgic trip down memory lane on the popular historic cruise loop that once circled the Sonic Drive Inn and the St. Mary Parish Courthouse prior to Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
“For most participants, this is more than just a drive around town,” said founder Chad Boutte. “It was the foundation of so many people’s lives, and who they’ve become today. It was our social network, the Facebook of our time.”
The reunion held last year was a huge success and it’s anticipated that the 2012 event will explode in popularity and attendance.
Boutte said Main Street businesses are encouraged to extend their business hours to benefit from the anticipated large crowds cruising by.
Previous residents will travel from all over Louisiana and beyond to return home to revisit this unique part of Franklin’s history.
“This is an exciting endeavor for the community, and it was designed to build a greater sense of community among residents, boost the city’s economy, reunite old friends, invite people back to the beautiful City of Franklin and to welcome the spring season,” Boutte said. “It’s also a wonderful way to help celebrate the recent 200th anniversary of the founding of St. Mary Parish.”
Participants and onlookers will gather on the the Main Street loop early in the morning March 17 to begin preparing for the days activities. Residents are encouraged to uncover their barbecue pits, and to get the fold up chairs out of the attic and garage, Boutte said. “The Main Street cruise is scheduled to officially begin at 7 p.m. but cruising throughout the day and supporting area merchants is encouraged. This year the focus is on the sole purpose of the event which is the nostalgic cruise. Due to unforeseen and unexpected circumstances, the festival, parade, and dance portion of this year’s event has been postponed until our 2013 reunion. Participants are encouraged to decorate their cars. No trailers allowed, and no one under the age of 12 is allowed to ride in the back of pickup trucks or similar vehicles.”
Sponsors of the 2012 Let’s Go Riding Franklin Reunion are the St. Mary Parish Chamber of Commerce, Hanagriff’s Machine Shop Inc. and L&H Printing.
