An attempt to smuggle drugs into the parish jail led to numerous arrests Friday.

Agents intercepted a package of contraband — containing Lortab and Tramadol pills, methamphetamine, tobacco, a cell phone and rolling papers — that two women attempted to smuggle inside the jail premises. The investigation led to a search warrant for 1009 Third St. in Morgan City, the residence of Heidi Songe.

Sheriff Mark Hebert said agents located marijuana, packaging material and a Lortab pill at the home. Three additional suspects were arrested at the residence, which is located within 2,000 feet of Shannon Elementary School.

Arrested Friday at 2:24 p.m. were:

—Songe, 35, for entering contraband into a penal facility, distribution of Lortab, distribution of methamphetamine, distribution of Tramadol, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of drug-free zone (school).

—Karen Thibodeaux, 44, of Fourth Street, Morgan City, who was with Songe at the jail, for entering contraband into a penal facility, distribution of Lortab, distribution of methamphetamine and distribution of Tramadol.

—Morgan Currington, 19, of North Verrett Street in Amelia for possession of Lortab, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a juvenile and violation of a drug free zone.

—Cody Thibodeaux, 21, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., for failure to appear on the charge of simple battery.

—Juvenile male, 16, of Morgan City, for possession of marijuana, violation of a drug-free zone and obstruction of justice.

All adult suspects were booked into the parish jail where they remained this morning with no bonds set. The juvenile was processed and released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.

In Berwick, Chelsea Eues, 19, of Berwick was charged Friday at 11:40 a.m. at the BPD on a warrant for cruelty to a juvenile.

Family members filed a complaint of physical child abuse, Chief James Richard said.

The child’s age and residence are being withheld to conceal the victim’s identity. Further details as to the nature of the abuse are not available.

Eues remained incarcerated this morning in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

Elsewhere, Ronald J. Eskind, 55, of New Iberia was arrested Saturday at 3:37 a.m. for second offense driving while intoxicated. The deputy was advised of a reckless driver headed eastbound on U.S. 90. He conducted a traffic stop in the Ricohoc area, at which time the deputy detected an odor of alcoholic beverage.

Eskind was arrested and transported to Franklin Police Department to run on the Intoxilyzer 5000, which yielded a .156 grams-percent result, Hebert said.

Eskind was booked into the parish jail where he posted a $10,000 bond and was released.

Jose Arispe, 41, of Alamo, Texas, was arrested Sunday at 4 a.m. for second offense possession of marijuana.

A deputy was called to Plantation Inn room 304 to resolve a fight.

When the deputy arrived, he was stopped by subject from room 310 and advised that Arispe came to their room and asked them if they wanted to buy marijuana. When they turned him down, he then went back to his room. The deputy spoke with suspect at room 304 and was advised that the subjects in room 310 had called him over and committed a battery upon him.

The sheriff said that when the deputy was speaking with Arispe, an odor of marijuana was emitting from the room. The deputy observed several burnt, hand-rolled marijuana cigarettes in the room.

Arispe was booked into the parish jail where he remained this morning with no bond set.

Shelia Roberts, 49, of David Drive in Bayou Vista was arrested Friday at 5:43 p.m. for theft by shoplifting.

A deputy was called to the Bayou Vista Wal-Mart where store security advised that Roberts was observed concealing cosmetics and jewelry, valued at $72.72, in her purse, Hebert said.

Roberts was issued a summons to appear in court.

Nicole Gassiott, 37, of La. 182 in Franklin was arrested Friday at 9:28 p.m. for theft by shoplifting.

A deputy was called to the Bayou Vista Wal-Mart where store security advised that Roberts was observed concealing clothing items and a bottle of rum, valued at $64.60, in her purse, the sheriff said.

Gassiott was issued a summons to appear in court.

In Morgan City, Paulo DeSena, 29 of Morgan City, was arrested Saturday at 9:28 p.m., charged with theft by shoplifting.

Officers were called to Rouses Supermarket in regards to a shoplifter. DeSena was being detained by store security after he had been observed eating a honey bun while doing his shopping, Chief Marc Folse said.

When he went to the counter to pay for his other groceries, the store clerk asked if he needed to pay for the honey bun, valued at 66 cents, and he replied no.

DeSena was arrested, booked and incarcerated with no bond set this morning.
