Twelve high school track and field squads will gather at Berwick High School’s Giesler Stadium this afternoon for the annual John Melvin Relays.
The event, hosted by Berwick High School, also will feature South Terrebonne, E.D. White, Catholic High of New Iberia, Westgate, Patterson, Morgan City, Central Catholic, Centerville, Hanson, Franklin and West St. Mary.
“It’s going to be a competitive meet,” Berwick track coach Paul Gilder said.
“Everybody brings a little bit to the table,” Gilder said. “It’s (going to) be exciting to see how it all kind of plays out.”
Field events start at 3 p.m., while and the track portion of the meet will begin at 6 p.m.
Westgate also will bring a wheelchair participant, Bryce Segura, who has participated in the event in the past.
He will participate in multiple field events as well as a single track event.
“He’s a pretty neat kid,” Gilder said.
The John Melvin Relays are named in memory of former Berwick High School track standout John Melvin, who was killed years ago in a motorcycle accident on his way to track practice at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
He still holds Berwick records, individually in the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter and as a member of the 4x200 meter relay team.
Melvin also was a member of the Berwick football and baseball teams.
His parents, Jim and Sue Melvin, are active participants in the meet.
