The Central Catholic Eagles’ and Lady Eagles’ basketball teams held their awards banquet Sunday to honor their athletes

Both teams made the Class 1A playoffs as No. 1 seeds but fell short of their goals of Class 1A state titles. The Lady Eagles fell in the quarterfinals at home to West St. John, while the Eagles lost on the road in the second round to No. 17 seed Plain Dealing in overtime.

The Eagles finished its season with a 25-5 overall record, while the Lady Eagles finished their season with a 23-4 overall record. Both finished district play with perfect records, the Eagles at 8-0 and the Lady Eagles at 6-0.

CCHS’ Lloyd Grogan was the biggest recipient among all athletes present as he was honored as a team captain, first-team All-District, District MVP as well as academic all-district.

He also was honored for making Class 1A All-State, for his selection as the team’s Best Offensive Player and for making the Louisiana West All-Star Basketball Team.

CCHS coach Ree Case said that Grogan was the first CCHS player he has successfully placed on the squad.

Also, Case announced that Grogan has finished his career with 2,502 points.

“I don’t know if that’s the most in school history, but I am going to go out on a limb and say it,” Case said.

Grogan’s point total increased each of the five years he has played for the Eagles. As an eighth-grader, he scored 435 points, while as a freshman, he scored 440 points. His sophomore, junior and senior seasons, the Eagles’ standout scored 530, 539 and 558 points, respectively.

In looking for Grogan’s statistics, Case discovered that during this season, he recorded his 300th win. Overall, his record now stands at 305-164. His 300th win was recorded on Feb. 3 in a District 8-A road win against Ascension Episcopal.

Other CCHS Eagles recognized during Sunday’s banquet were Dontrell Brown and Josh Singleton, who received the team’s Best Defensive Player; team captains and seniors, Jovon Johnson, Tyler Louviere, Kendall Robinson and Conner LeBlanc, All-District selections; Dontrell Brown and Josh Singleton, first-team selections; Nicholas Case and Tyler Hoffpauir, second-team selections; and Johnson, Brent Green and Lamar Grogan, honorable mention.

Brown also was recognized as an honorable mention Class 1A All-State Selection.

Also, Academic All-District selections were recognized. They were Garrett LeBlanc, Hoffpauir, Case, C. LeBlanc.

On the girls’ side, CCHS’ head coach Kindra Halverson and assistant coach Joe Jones recognized team members.

Central Catholic’s trio, sophomores Meo Knight and Randi Brown and junior Makayla McDaniel took many of the top honors.

Knight was honored as the team’s MVP and captain and All-District MVP and first-team All-District, while Brown and McDaniel were named Offensive and Defensive players of the year, respectively. Brown and McDaniel also were first team all-district selections.

Also, the three were recognized for making the Class 1A All-State team. Knight made the first team, while Brown was a second team selection and McDaniel was named honorable mention.

Other award winners included:

—All-District: Megan Landry, All-Defensive team; and Caroline Byrne, Geralyn Garrett, Brieanna Hill and Abigail Bergeron, honorable mention.

—Academic All-District: Byrne, Knight, Maria Templet, Karley Guidry, Carlie Boagni, Hill, Bergeron, Anastasia Johnson, Brown, McDaniel and Landry.

—Most Improved: Garrett and Landry.

—Coaches Award: Maria Templet and Courtney McGuire.

—Team Spirit Award: Guidry, Johnson and Boagni.

—Leadership and Hustle Award: Byrne and Bergeron.

—Free Throw award: Hill
