Hail, overwhelming rain and a lightning strike marked the third night of intense storms in the Tri-City area.

A home at 1513 Bernice St. in Morgan City was hit by lightning around 4 a.m. today when the wave of showers made its way through the area.

Morgan City Assistant Fire Chief Mark Stephens said the home’s meter pan and breaker box were destroyed, but other damage would need to be assessed by a certified electrician.

Four firetrucks and 12 personnel responded to the 4:02 a.m. call. They were back at the station by 5 a.m.

Morgan City Drainage District 2 President Carl Kraemer said gauges at the board’s office registered about three inches of rain between 3:50 a.m. and 4:45 a.m., causing flooding as the pumps were overburdened.

Marble-sized hail fell at the same time, Kraemer said.
