FRESHWATER CITY – State Police are trying to determine why Shawn Harris of Abbeville drove his vehicle into a canal along La. 82, not far from Pecan Island.

The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office and State Police received word from 911 that a vehicle was spotted half in and half out a canal along La. 82, about two miles north of Freshwater City.

It is unknown by the Meridional if when Acadian Ambulance and Vermilion Parish Sheriff deputies arrived on scene if Harris was in or out of the vehicle.

He looks to have escaped out of the vehicle by crawling out the driver’s side window.

Fishermen, who were across the street from the accident, said they arrived to fish when they noticed the vehicle in the water and Harris on a stretcher being put into the ambulance.

Harris sustained minor injuries and was transported to Abbeville General Hospital.

The 31-year-old Harris looked to be heading south on La. 82 and for unknown reasons crossed the center line and landed in the shallow part of the canal.

His vehicle, a 2007 Ford Edge, rolled a short distance before coming to a stop in six to seven feet of water.
