Charges against Edward Payton III in Baldwin were declined by the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Assistant District Attorney Vincent Borne said this was done because of insufficient evidence.

Payton, 49, the son of St. Mary Parish School Board Vice President Ed Payton Jr., was arrested for misdemeanor theft April 5 for allegedly selling two string trimmers, owned by the school board, to another individual. They were valued at $200.

The younger Payton officially retired from the school board on Aug. 10, but his last physical day on the job was May 9. The alleged incident regarding string trimmers happened in late September.
