DEVILLE – A man and a child riding an ATV on a public road were killed Sunday when the machine collided with a pickup trying to avoid it.

The accident occurred on Hickory Grove Loop at Cotton Island Road about 2 p.m.

State Police said the crash involved a 2003 Yamaha ATV, driven by Scott A. Kelley, 39, od Deville and a 2009 Ford pickup, driven by Gerald W. Huffman II, 41, of Pineville

The Yamaha was south bound in the north bound lane of Hickory Grove Loop. The Ford was north bound in the north bound lane of Hickory Grove Loop when Huffman steered his vehicle into the north bound ditch in an attempt to avoid the Yamaha.

Kelley attempted to avoid the Ford, but over steered the ATV into the north bound ditch which resulted in the Yamaha colliding with the Ford.

Scott Kelley was pronounced dead. Devon Kelley, 7, and another juvenile, 11, of Ball, were passengers on the ATV. Devon Kelley was killed.

The other juvenile received serious injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center. Scott Kelley and the juveniles were not wearing helmets.

Huffman II was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.
