Man, allegedly drunk, celebrating birthday drives into oncoming car, kills five

SLAUGHTER – A man celebrating his 30th birthday allegedly killed five people while driving drunk Wednesday night.

Police said Brett Gerald, 30, of Greensburg drove his pickup head-on into an on-coming car, killing five and critically injuring two others. Gerald had minor injurries.

He is charged with five counts of vehicular homicide, two counts of first degree vehicle negligence injury, DWI 2nd, reckless operation and driving left of center.

Dead are Brenda Gaines, 64, of Baton Rouge, driver of the car; Angela Mosely, 35, Baton Rouge; Denise Gaines, 33; Diamond Johnson, 12 and Jyren Johnson, 6.

The crash happened on a rural stretch of La. 67 about 10 p.m.
