New Orleans minister set to become SBC's first black president

NEW ORLEANS – The Rev. Fred Luter, Jr. is expected to become the first black president of the Southern Baptist Convention when convention delegates voted next week here.

The SB is the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.

Luter, 55, grew up in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward. His church is the largest SBC congregation in Louisiana.
