Ortego, an assistant football coach at Crowley High, was arrested following an investigation into a complaint that was filed with the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office on June 6.
Ortego has been charged with prohibited sexual conduct.
He had been a special education teacher and was Crowley High’s wide receivers coach before he resigned on Monday.
According to Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon, Ortego, 48, turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday afternoon after investigators obtained an arrest warrant for prohibited sexual conduct via telecommunications between an educator and student.
Ortego, who also starred at Eunice High School, was a member of the Chicago Bears when they won Super Bowl XX following his rookie season in 1985. He played for the Bears from 1985-87. In his brief NFL career, he caught 23 passes for 430 yards and two touchdowns.
Ortego was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail with bond set at $25,000 by District Judge John Trahan. Details of the allegations were not available.
