The cause of the June 26 fire that destroyed Morgan City’s main electrical transformer and left the entire city without electricity for a day still has yet to be determined.

Forensic engineers from the firm Patterson & Dewar Engineers of Norcross, Ga., are scheduled to visit the burned transformer Aug. 22, according to city chief administrative officer Lorrie Braus.

Insurance carriers Lloyd’s of London and Travelers jointly hired P&D Engineers to determine the cause of the fire. Lloyd’s is the city’s property insurer, and Travelers insured the boiler and machinery. How much of the costs for claims that each carrier will pay will depend on the yet-determined cause of the fire.

P&D Engineers is also seeking bids for a replacement transformer for the Joseph Cefalu Steam Plant on Avoca Road.

The specification sheet states that “Bids are solicited for one 60 MVA 138-69 kV LTC Autotransformer. The unit is to be delivered as soon as possible after release of order, as this is a replacement for a failed unit. Therefore, time is of the essence so bids for quicker delivery will be considered.”

Bids are being accepted until Aug. 21.
