Fate may have stepped in for the young Patterson Lumberjacks.
The Lumberjack’s week 2 football matchup Friday against Class 5A Central Lafourche has been moved to Patterson instead of its original location in Raceland.
PHS coach Tommy Minton said the change was made because Central Lafourche is out of school still and having some issues with its stadium due to Hurricane Isaac.
Patterson was upset last week on the road, losing to Crowley in a 41-36 shootout. Combined, the teams totaled more than 1,000 yards and 77 points.
Lightning delayed the game more than an hour.
Patterson’s defense surrendered 20 points and 193 yards on the first four plays of the game.
As for its week 2 opponent, Minton said his squad has had a good week of practice.
“We are making adjustments and correcting the mistakes we made Saturday,” Minton said. “We are just working hard to get better.”
While the defense got the majority of the blame for the loss, allowing 597 yards (522 rushing, 75 passing) Minton stressed overall improvement.
“Offensively, we didn’t capitalize on a couple possessions with the game on the line,” he said. “We need to score every time we get in the red zone.”
The Gents limited Patterson to just 11 yards and forced two turnovers in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
Central Lafourche’s week one game against Ponchatoula was cancelled due to Hurricane Isaac.
“They are a triple option team with a big, physical offensive line,” Minton said. “We’re going to have to be sound in all three phases of the option game. The quarterback and fullback are both good athletes, and they have a 320-pound guard who’s really good.”
After Saturday’s loss, Patterson (0-1) fell from sixth to 10th in the Louisiana Sportswriter’s Association’s Class 3A rankings.
Kickoff for Friday’s game is set for 7 p.m.
