A sheriff’s department van leaving the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center with a work crew was involved in an accident this morning.

Sheriff’s officials say that at about 6 a.m. the van was struck by a waste collection truck on the U.S. 90 frontage road near the Garden City overpass.

There were 14 inmates aboard. One was transported to Franklin Foundation Hospital by Acadian Ambulance and treated for a minor shoulder injury.

All inmates and the driver were given medical examinations as a precaution.

The Louisiana State Police are investigating the accident.
