According to State Police, Sgt. Kevin Weiner, 30, was driving in a convoy when his Humvee was hit from behind by an 18-wheeler driven by James Saucier, 43, of Opelousas.
The Humvee overturned and ended up in the median about five miles north of I-49’s intersection with La. Hwy. 6.
Sgt. John Fike, 32, of Bossier City, a passenger in the Humvee, was treated for moderate injuries and Saucier was not hurt, troopers said.
Troopers said the convoy was traveling about 55 mph and the 18-wheeler was traveling faster when the collision occurred about 3 p.m.
The Guardsmen were part of the 165th CSSB Unit from Bossier City. Weiner had been with the National Guard 12 years.
The convoy was returning home from Hammond. While in Hammond, the Guardsmen were in charge of logistics in reference to the transportation of relief supplies during Hurricane Isaac.
